Ron Soodalter, co-author of The Slave Next Door: Human Trafficking and Slavery in America Today

"Today’s forms of slavery are hidden, insidious, and often nearly impossible to detect...It is up to us as citizens of the “Land of the Free” to make ourselves more aware of the problem, and become more involved in its ultimate eradication." ~ Ron Soodalter

In addition to writing with Free the Slaves President Kevin Bales on The Slave Next Door, Ron teaches classes and seminars to various age groups on the historic and modern-day slave trade. He has written articles for such magazines as Smithsonian, New York Archives, and Civil War Times, and is a featured columnist for America’s Civil War. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Abraham Lincoln Institute.

Hosting a Table

Thank you for your interest in serving as a Table Host for the Seattle Against Slavery (SAS) Benefit Dinner. We are grateful for friends and supporters like you who allow us to make a difference in the lives of so many. Below you will find a short description of the purpose of the event and some detailed instructions for Table Hosts. We hope you can join us.

About the Benefit
  • At this seated dinner, SAS will provide an elegant atmosphere for long-standing friends and newcomers alike to connect with our mission through first-hand accounts of justice prevailing over oppression
  • The evening’s highlights will include a compelling address by Ron Soodalter, Co-Author of The Slave Next Door and American slavery historian, a live musical performance by JUBILEE, and a dance performance by the Karin Stevens Dance Company.
  • At the end of the evening, guests will be invited to support the work of SAS financially.

The Role of a Table Host:
  • Table Hosts commit to filling a 10-person table at the benefit dinner with guests who could become SAS supporters.
  • Table Hosts receive step-by-step support in the form of electronic and hard-copy invitations (hard-copies sent upon request), special communications and guidelines, and SAS materials to help inform and invite their guests.
  • Table Hosts can choose to underwrite the cost of the table ($650 for a 10-person table), or they can invite guests to pay for their own tickets ($65 per person) while still being seated with the Table Host.

2 Ways to Reserve a Table (email us first at events@seattleagainstslavery.org):

1) Purchase a whole table (10 people total at $65 per person so table is $650) and invite guests to sit at your table.

To commit to paying for a whole table (10 seats for $650) at the SAS Benefit Dinner, please pay here via credit card here:

OR

2) Commit to host a table and have each of your guest register as well as yourself pay their own way so that you're not personally responsible for the the $650 nor will SAS hold you to filling each seat. We will trust you to do your best to fill each seat. All empty seats will be filled by us so no worries.

FAQs

Is it my responsibility to collect the ticket money from my guests?
No. If your guests are purchasing their own tickets, they must register with SAS online at seattleagainstslavery.org/benefit.aspx.

Can I purchase a whole table for my guests and myself?
Yes. When you register for the event, submit payment for your full table along with the full names and mailing addresses of your guests.

Are children welcome?
Because of the sensitive and often intense nature of the work SAS supports, we ask that children not attend the event. However, we will leave the ultimate judgment with the parent or guardian.

The fair market value of each event ticket is $65 and is not tax-deductible. Any amount over and above the fair market value will be considered a gift to SAS and is tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. Ticket sales are final and non-refundable.
