ABOUT US

Seattle Against Slavery (SAS) is a grassroots coalition working to make a slave-free world, one city at a time.  Uniting community-based abolition activists, local and national non-government organizations, government agencies, and other coalitions, SAS seeks to raise human trafficking awareness and mobilize the public to better advocate for victims, enhance survivor care, promote legislation to combat human trafficking, and help service providers build capacity.  Our ultimate goal is to restore the dignity and value of all human beings by ending these demeaning and dehumanizing practices.

To accomplish this goal, SAS facilitates communication, coordination, and collaboration among its partner organizations in order to optimize numerous campaigns, initiatives, and projects.  With effective communication, we unite our voices to send a clearer message and bring about real change.  By coordinating our energies and resources, we are better able to provide services and advocacy where it is most needed.  Working collaboratively, we can achieve greater results and compliment our strengths.  Together, we celebrate our successes while supporting one another through the challenges and obstacles.  The eradication of slavery will not happen easily, and for this reason strong coalitions provide the best chance for long term, systematic transformation.

Whether the work is local or global, supporting survivor care or promoting new or stronger anti-trafficking laws, we seek to connect individuals and organizations within the Greater Seattle area to create a vocal and effective community of abolitionists.  SAS members have met with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Western Washington District's Criminal Enterprises Division, the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, Seattle Police Department, City of Seattle’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention unit, and Washington Advisory Committee on Trafficking (WashACT).  We collaborate with many NGOs with local, national, or international reach, including New Horizons Ministries, Not for Sale, and International Justice Mission. SAS also works closely with the Washington Anti-Trafficking Response Network (WARN) and the Washington Advisory Committee on Trafficking. Today, we have hundreds members, partnering with nearly all the organizations in the Puget Sound area that are actively fighting slavery and human trafficking.

Our History

Seattle Against Slavery was birthed on June 4, 2009 with a meeting of 42 anti-trafficking activists in the wake of the UNBOUND Conference, hosted by the Freedom Initiative. With the understanding that people fighting slavery and human trafficking must have more extensive and intricate networks than human traffickers, the Freedom Initiative brought together individuals and volunteers from all backgrounds to begin a network in Seattle. The Freedom Initiative partnered with International Justice Mission (IJM) to host a meeting with 42 passionate activists led by Alex Sum (IJM volunteer) & Kelly Hogan (Chair of The Freedom Initiative and SPU Abolition President). This network agreed to begin this journey of building a real community together where everyone had a voice and a collaborating spirit to not only coordinate our events so we do not overlap but also volunteer at one another’s events so we can be even more effective for the greater good of seeing better results with our events, initiatives, and projects.
